Total hours

18 hrs / 2 years

Renewal cycle

Every 2 years

Core minimum

9 Core hrs (incl. 3-hr mandatory)

Issued by

Utah Division of Real Estate (DRE)

Utah asks for 18 hours every two years, but the mix matters: half of it is pinned to Core topics, and 3 of those hours have to be a specific Division-approved mandatory course that changes periodically. And the very first renewal of a new sales agent looks nothing like the renewals after it.

Here is the full picture for sales agents, in plain English, with the first-renewal new-agent requirement called out.

The base requirement: 18 hours every 2 years

For the second and subsequent renewals, active Utah sales agents must complete 18 hours of certified continuing education each two-year renewal cycle. At least 9 of those hours must be in Core topics, and 3 of the 9 Core hours must be a Division-approved 3-hour mandatory course. The remaining hours can be additional Core or elective courses.

First renewal: the New Agent course

  • New sales agents must complete the 12-hour New Agent course for their first renewal, plus a Division-approved 3-hour mandatory course.
  • The remaining 3 hours of the 18 can be any Core or elective courses.
  • So your first renewal is built around the New Agent course rather than the standard 9-hour Core minimum.
  • Plan the 12-hour New Agent course early - it is the centerpiece of your first cycle and easy to leave too late.

Brokers and the daily cap

  • Brokers also complete 18 hours per cycle, with at least 9 Core hours, of which 3 must be the Division-approved mandatory course.
  • Licensees may complete a maximum of 8 hours of continuing education per day, so the full 18 cannot be crammed into one or two days.
  • All courses must be certified by the Utah Division of Real Estate - confirm certification and the Core-versus-elective designation before you buy.
  • The 3-hour mandatory course is updated periodically, so check that you are taking the current version.

When is your deadline?

Utah real estate licenses renew every two years, and all CE must be completed by the 15th of your renewal month to ensure an on-time renewal. Renew within the first 30 days after expiration and you still complete the full 18 hours plus a late fee. Finish before the 15th so reporting and processing do not cost you a lapse.

How CredTally keeps this on autopilot

  • Track the 18-hour total with separate buckets for the 9-hour Core minimum and the 3-hour Division mandatory course - or switch to the 12-hour New Agent view for a first renewal.
  • Store each certificate as you finish, filed with the credit it proves.
  • Reminders at 90, 60, 30, and 7 days before your renewal month - early enough that the 8-hour daily cap and the 15th-of-the-month cutoff never box you in.
  • One-click export of a dated packet - summary plus every certificate - for any audit or broker review.
  • Licensed in Utah plus another state, or also an appraiser or MLO? Every license sits on its own card with its own deadline in one dashboard.
