New Jersey is a 30-hours-every-two-years state with a couple of specific topics folded in. Unlike many states, it lets you carry forward up to 15 extra hours into your next cycle - a nice cushion if you tend to finish early.

Here is what counts, in plain English.

The base requirement: 30 hours every 2 years

The New Jersey Board of Nursing requires RNs to complete a minimum of 30 continuing nursing education contact hours in the two years immediately before renewal. If you complete more than 30, you can carry forward up to 15 additional contact hours into the next renewal period. CE is overseen by the Board under the Division of Consumer Affairs.

Required topics inside the 30 hours

  • Opioid prescribing and pain - 1 hour on the prescription of opioid drugs, including alternatives for managing pain and the risks and signs of opioid abuse, addiction, and diversion.
  • Organ and tissue recovery and donation - 1 hour required.
  • Implicit and explicit bias - 1 hour, required if you provide care to pregnant persons.
  • These topics count within the 30 hours, so build them into your plan rather than treating them as extras.

When is your deadline?

New Jersey RN licenses renew every two years. Your renewal date and status are in your New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs licensing account. Complete all 30 hours, including the required topics, before you renew - and remember any extra hours beyond 30 (up to 15) can roll into your next cycle.

How CredTally keeps this on autopilot

  • Enter the 30-hour target once, then add sub-requirements like 1 hr opioid and pain and 1 hr organ and tissue donation - the dashboard shows exactly what is still owed in each bucket.
  • Snap a photo of each certificate as you finish a course; it is stored privately with the credit it proves.
  • Reminder emails at 90, 60, 30, and 7 days before your renewal date, with your remaining hours in the subject line.
  • If the Board asks for proof, export a dated PDF packet of your whole cycle - summary plus every certificate - in one click.
