The base requirement: 30 hours every 2 years

The Nevada State Board of Nursing requires 30 contact hours of continuing education each two-year renewal period, in content relevant to the practice of nursing. At renewal you affirm that you are in compliance, and the Board runs random audits to verify it - so the hours have to be real and documented, not just attested.

New nurses get a break on the base: if you earned your degree within the last two years, you do not have to complete the 30 hours for your first renewal. You do, however, still owe the mandatory topics below.

The mandatory topics most nurses forget

• Bioterrorism - a one-time, 4-hour course in detecting and responding to bioterrorism and weapons of mass destruction. Once you have completed it, you do not repeat it - but new nurses owe it even when they are exempt from the 30-hour base.
• Cultural competency - 4 contact hours every renewal cycle, covering cultural competency and diversity, equity, and inclusion. This requirement increased from 2 to 4 hours as of January 1, 2024, so older guidance citing 2 hours is out of date.
• HIV-related bias - nurses who provide or supervise emergency medical services in a hospital or primary-care setting must complete at least 2 hours on stigma, discrimination, and unrecognized bias toward people who have or are at high risk of acquiring HIV, within two years of beginning that work.
• These mandatory topics generally count inside your 30 hours rather than on top of them - but you still have to make sure your course choices actually cover them.

When is your deadline?

Nevada RN licenses renew every two years, and the renewal period looks back two years from when you submit. Your exact expiration date is in your Nevada State Board of Nursing online account. Complete your hours - base plus mandatory topics - before you renew, and keep your certificates, because the Board audits at random.
