Issued by

Michigan Board of Nursing

Michigan asks for 25 contact hours every two years, with a few mandated topics that come out of that total. The one that catches people is implicit bias - it is now an ongoing requirement of 1 hour per license year, so 2 hours per two-year renewal.

Here is what has to be in your 25, in plain English.

The base requirement: 25 hours every 2 years

Michigan requires RNs to complete 25 contact hours of continuing education every two-year renewal cycle. The mandated topics below are included within those 25 hours. The program is administered by LARA (the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs) through the Board of Nursing. Note that no more than 12 hours may be earned in a single 24-hour period.

Mandatory topics inside the 25 hours

  • Pain and symptom management - 2 of the 25 hours must cover this.
  • Implicit bias - 1 hour of implicit bias training is required per year of the license cycle, which works out to 2 hours for a two-year renewal.
  • Human trafficking - 1 hour identifying victims of human trafficking, required once (a one-time requirement) rather than every cycle.
  • These topics count within the 25 hours, so plan your courses to cover them rather than adding hours.

When is your deadline?

Michigan RN licenses renew every two years. Your renewal date and status are in your MiPLUS account with LARA. Complete all 25 hours, including the pain management and implicit bias hours, before you renew - and confirm your one-time human trafficking course is on file.

How CredTally keeps this on autopilot

  • Enter the 25-hour target once, then add sub-requirements like 2 hrs pain management and 2 hrs implicit bias - the dashboard shows exactly what is still owed in each bucket, plus the one-time human trafficking course.
  • Snap a photo of each certificate as you finish a course; it is stored privately with the credit it proves.
  • Reminder emails at 90, 60, 30, and 7 days before your renewal date, with your remaining hours in the subject line.
  • If LARA audits you, export a dated PDF packet of your whole cycle - summary plus every certificate - in one click.
