Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing

Massachusetts keeps the headline number modest: 15 contact hours of continuing education every two-year renewal cycle. The catch is the embedded mandatory topics. At least one of those 15 hours has to cover domestic and sexual violence, and there is a separate one-time training on Alzheimer's disease and dementia you have to complete once in your career.

Good news for new nurses: your very first renewal period is exempt from the 15-hour requirement. Here is the full picture, in plain English.

The base requirement: 15 hours every 2 years

The Board of Registration in Nursing requires all licensed nurses to complete 15 contact hours of continuing education to renew. You must earn those hours within the two years immediately before your renewal date - only contact hours earned in that window count. You do not have to complete any CE for your first renewal period; the 15-hour requirement kicks in for every renewal after that.

Keep your documentation. You are responsible for maintaining evidence of CE completion for your most recent two consecutive renewal periods - in other words, four years of records.

The mandatory topics most nurses forget

  • Domestic and sexual violence - at least one of your 15 contact hours must address this topic, as required under Chapter 260. The Board offers this training at no charge on its website, so there is no excuse to skip it.
  • Alzheimer's disease and dementia - a one-time requirement, completed once at initial licensure or any renewal, covering the diagnosis, treatment, and care of patients with cognitive impairments. There is no prescribed course or fixed number of hours for it, but you must document that you completed it.
  • These mandatory topics live inside your 15 hours - they are not extra hours on top - but you still have to make sure your course selections actually cover them.

When is your deadline?

Massachusetts RN licenses renew every two years, on your birthday in even-numbered years. Your exact date is on your license and in the state's e-licensing portal. CE must be completed in the two years before you renew, and you must keep proof for your two most recent renewal periods - so hold on to every certificate.

How CredTally keeps this on autopilot

  • Enter '15 hours by your deadline' once, then add the 'domestic and sexual violence' and one-time 'Alzheimer's and dementia' sub-requirements - the progress rings show exactly what is still owed in each bucket.
  • Snap a photo of each certificate as you finish a course; it is stored privately with the credit it proves, including the one-time dementia training you will not want to repeat.
  • Reminder emails at 90, 60, 30, and 7 days before your even-year birthday renewal, with your remaining hours in the subject line.
  • Because Massachusetts wants four years of records, CredTally keeps your past cycles intact and exportable as a dated PDF packet in one click.
