Maine Real Estate CE Requirements, Explained

The base requirement: 21 hours every 2 years

Active associate brokers, brokers, and designated brokers must complete 21 clock hours of Commission-approved continuing education as a prerequisite to renewing the license each two-year cycle. Included in those 21 hours is the 3-hour core course that is mandatory at the time of renewal - the rest can be approved electives.

The core course and the sales agent quirk

• The mandatory core course changes periodically; effective April 1, 2025 it is Reasonable Care and Diligence.
• The 3-hour core course counts within the 21 hours, not on top of them.
• CE completed for one renewal applies only to that renewal cycle - it does not carry forward.
• The entry-level Sales Agent license is non-renewable; agents must advance to Associate Broker to keep practicing, at which point the 21-hour cycle applies.

When is your deadline?

Maine broker-level licenses renew every two years, and all 21 hours must be completed before you submit your renewal application. There is a 90-day grace period after expiration during which you can complete education and renew with a late fee, but you cannot practice on an expired license. The Commission runs random monthly audits, so keep certificates as proof - they are not submitted at renewal.
