Kansas Board of Accountancy
Kansas is one of the lighter states on ethics: 80 hours over two years, but only 2 of them need to be ethics - half what many states demand. The two-year period runs July 1 to June 30, and your reporting year is set by whether your certificate number is even or odd.
CPAs call this CPE (continuing professional education), not CE. Here is how an active Kansas license actually works, in plain English.
The base requirement: 80 hours over two years
The Kansas Board of Accountancy requires 80 hours of CPE during each two-year reporting period, which runs July 1 to June 30. Whether you report in an even or odd year is determined by the parity of your certificate number. Self-study and group internet-based programs must come from NASBA Registry, AICPA, or state society sponsors.
Ethics, carryover, and subject caps
- 2 hours of professional ethics relating to the practice of public accountancy are required each two-year period.
- The 2 ethics hours count within the 80-hour total, not on top of it.
- Up to 20 hours earned beyond the 80-hour requirement may be carried forward to the next period - but carryover hours cannot satisfy the ethics requirement.
- No more than 30% of your hours may be in personal-development subjects, and college coursework is capped at 50% of the total.

Kansas CPA permits renew biennially with a June 30 deadline, matching the close of the two-year CPE period. The full 80 hours and your 2 ethics hours must be complete before you renew. Failing to meet the requirement can trigger an automatic penalty of additional CPE hours, so finishing on time matters.
How CredTally keeps this on autopilot
- Track the two-year 80-hour total with a dedicated 2-hour ethics bucket, shown separately from your general hours.
- A running tally of carryover-eligible surplus hours, with a note that carryover cannot cover ethics.
- Store every completion certificate in a private vault, attached to the exact credit it proves, so a Board audit is a one-click export.
- Reminders at 90, 60, 30, and 7 days before your June 30 deadline, with remaining hours per requirement.
- Hold licenses in more than one state? Each gets its own card, deadline, and progress on a single dashboard.
