Issued by

Iowa Real Estate Commission (IREC)

Iowa keeps a clean three-year, 36-hour structure with two fixed pieces: 8 hours of Law Update and 4 hours of Ethics, both of which must be completed within the current cycle. The wrinkle is delivery format - at least 12 of your 36 hours have to come from live instruction, so an all-online plan will not actually satisfy the requirement.

Here is what Iowa salespersons and brokers owe IREC, with the live-instruction rule and the firm December 31 deadline flagged.

The base requirement: 36 hours every 3 years

The Iowa Real Estate Commission requires 36 hours of approved continuing education during each three-year renewal cycle. The total breaks down into 8 hours of Law Update, 4 hours of Ethics, and 24 hours of Commission-approved electives. The Law Update and Ethics courses must be completed during the current renewal cycle - they do not carry over from a prior period.

The live-instruction rule and carryover

  • At least 12 of the 36 hours must be completed through live instruction; a maximum of 24 hours can come from distance learning.
  • You may carry over up to 18 unused elective hours from your previous renewal cycle.
  • A given course can generally be counted only once unless the course number or instructor differs.
  • As an alternative to CE, salespersons and brokers may retake the licensing exam between July 1 and December 31 of the renewal year.

When is your deadline?

All continuing education must be completed no later than December 31 of your renewal year, and Iowa allows no grace period for finishing courses after that date. Because providers need time to report, finishing with a margin is the safe pattern. Keep your certificates - you want proof of the Law Update and Ethics hours specifically if the Commission asks.

How CredTally keeps this on autopilot

  • Track the 36-hour total with separate buckets for Law Update (8 hrs), Ethics (4 hrs), electives, and a live-instruction counter for the 12-hour minimum.
  • Store each certificate as you finish, filed with the credit it proves in a private vault.
  • Reminders at 90, 60, 30, and 7 days before the December 31 deadline - early enough that the live-instruction requirement is not a last-minute scramble.
  • One-click export of a dated packet - summary plus every certificate - for any audit or broker review.
  • Licensed in Iowa plus another state, or also an appraiser or MLO? Each license has its own card, deadline, and reminders in one dashboard.
