Indiana runs a 120-hour, three-year cycle with a 20-hour annual floor underneath it. Tucked inside the 120 are two specific minimums - accounting and auditing hours and ethics hours - plus a cap on self-study that surprises people who learn entirely online.

CPAs call this CPE (continuing professional education), not CE. Here is what an active Indiana license requires, in plain English.

The base requirement: 120 hours over three years

The Indiana Board of Accountancy requires 120 hours of CPE during each three-year reporting period, with a minimum of 20 hours completed in each calendar year. CPE measured across the three calendar years is tied to your renewal cycle, and credits must come from board-recognized programs such as NASBA National Registry sponsors.

Subject minimums and the self-study cap

  • At least 12 hours - 10% of the 120 - must be in accounting and auditing (A&A) over the three-year period.
  • At least 4 hours must be in ethics over the three-year period.
  • Both the A&A and ethics hours count within the 120-hour total, not on top of it.
  • No more than 50% of your required hours may be earned through self-study, so fully self-paced learners need some other format in the mix.

When is your deadline?

Indiana CPA licenses renew on a three-year cycle and expire June 30 of the renewal year. The full 120 hours, the 20-hour annual minimums, the A&A hours, and your ethics hours must all be complete before you renew. Confirm your exact cycle in your Indiana licensing account.

How CredTally keeps this on autopilot

  • Track the three-year 120-hour total alongside the 20-hour annual minimum so neither clock slips past you.
  • Dedicated buckets for the 12-hour A&A minimum and the 4-hour ethics requirement, plus a warning when self-study approaches the 50% cap.
  • Store every completion certificate in a private vault, attached to the exact credit it proves, so a Board audit is a one-click export.
  • Reminders at 90, 60, 30, and 7 days before your June 30 deadline, with remaining hours per requirement.
  • Hold licenses in more than one state? Each gets its own card, deadline, and progress on a single dashboard.
