Illinois Board of Nursing

Illinois asks for 20 contact hours every two years - but several specific topics are folded into that 20. The good news is they do not add to your total; the catch is you have to make sure your courses actually hit each required subject.

Here is what has to be in the mix, in plain English.

The base requirement: 20 hours every 2 years

Illinois requires RNs to complete 20 contact hours of continuing education every two-year renewal cycle. The mandated subject areas below are included within those 20 hours - they do not increase the number of hours you need to renew. The CE is administered through IDFPR (the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation).

Topics that must be inside your 20 hours

  • Sexual harassment prevention - 1 hour, included in the 20.
  • Implicit bias awareness - 1 hour of evidence-based implicit bias in healthcare training, included in the 20.
  • Cultural competency - 1 hour, required for renewals on or after January 1, 2025.
  • Alzheimer's disease and other dementias - 1 hour, for RNs who treat patients aged 26 or older.
  • None of these add to the total - they are carved out of your 20, so choose courses that cover them.

When is your deadline?

Illinois RN licenses renew every two years (the RN license period ends May 31 of even-numbered years). Your exact status is in your IDFPR online account. All 20 hours - including the mandated topics - must be completed before you renew, and IDFPR can audit, so keep your certificates.

How CredTally keeps this on autopilot

  • Enter the 20-hour target once, then add sub-requirements like 1 hr implicit bias, 1 hr sexual harassment, and 1 hr cultural competency - the dashboard shows exactly what is still owed in each bucket.
  • Snap a photo of each certificate as you finish a course; it is stored privately with the credit it proves.
  • Reminder emails at 90, 60, 30, and 7 days before your renewal date, with your remaining hours in the subject line.
  • If IDFPR audits you, export a dated PDF packet of your whole cycle - summary plus every certificate - in one click.
