Idaho Board of Nursing
Idaho does not require a fixed block of continuing education hours to renew an RN license. Instead, the Board of Nursing uses a continued-competency model: you complete at least two learning activities from a menu during each two-year renewal period. Continuing education is just one item on that menu - the CE option is 15 contact hours - but you could satisfy the rule entirely through practice hours and a national certification.
That makes Idaho one of the more flexible states, and also one of the easiest to misread, because plenty of summaries online still describe it as a flat '15 hours of CE' state. Here is what the rule actually says, in plain English.
How the two-activity competency rule works
Under the Idaho Board of Nursing's rules, an RN must complete or comply with at least two of the listed learning activities within the two-year renewal period. The activities are grouped into practice, education, and professional-engagement categories, and your two can come from any one or more of those groups.
This is the part that surprises people: there is no standalone CE-hours mandate. Continuing education is one option, worth choosing if it is the easiest box for you to control, but a working nurse who maintains a national certification and logs enough practice hours may already satisfy the rule without taking a formal CE course.
What counts toward your two activities
- Practice - 100 hours of nursing practice or simulation practice, or holding a current nursing specialty certification.
- Continuing education - 15 contact hours of approved continuing education, relevant to your practice area, from an accredited or approved provider.
- Academic education - completion of at least one semester credit hour of post-licensure academic education.
- Refresher or professional engagement - a board-recognized refresher course; participating in or presenting a workshop, seminar, or conference; or contributing to a published nursing-related article.
- You need any two of these, and they can be from the same category or different ones.

Idaho RN licenses renew every two years and expire on August 31 of odd-numbered years. You must keep documentation showing you met the requirement for the duration of the current two-year period. If you are selected for an audit, you will be contacted and must submit your documentation to the Board within 30 days, so do not throw anything away.
How CredTally keeps this on autopilot
- Set your two chosen activities - say '15 CE contact hours' plus '100 practice hours,' or 'maintain national certification' - and the progress rings show exactly what is still owed before renewal.
- Snap a photo of each certificate, certification card, or practice-hours record as you complete it; it is stored privately with the credit it proves.
- Reminder emails at 90, 60, 30, and 7 days before the August 31 deadline so you are never assembling two activities at the last minute.
- Because Idaho can request documentation within 30 days of an audit, CredTally keeps everything dated and exportable as a PDF packet in one click. Hold licenses in more than one state? Each gets its own card and reminders on one dashboard.
