Connecticut RN Continuing Education Requirements, Explained

No general CE - but one required training

Connecticut does not impose a general continuing education hour requirement on RNs for routine renewal. Instead, the one mandate is this: nurses actively practicing in Connecticut must complete two contact hours of training or education on screening for conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and grief, and suicide risk, plus suicide prevention. For licenses renewing on or after January 1, 2022, this is required once and then once every six years thereafter.

One contact hour means at least 50 minutes of instruction, so the requirement is essentially a single short course every six years. The training must come from a qualifying provider - for example the American Nurses Association, the Connecticut Hospital Association, an accredited academic institution, or a state or local health department.

Why the six-year clock is the catch

Because there is no annual pile of hours to assemble, the mental health and suicide-prevention training is the only thing you actively have to remember - and it surfaces only once every six years. That is exactly the kind of requirement that gets missed: you completed it last time, it has not come up in years, and then a renewal asks you to attest to it and you cannot remember whether you are due.

Treat it like a long-cycle recurring task with a hard expiration date, not a one-and-done. Keep the certificate from the year you took it so you can prove both that you completed it and when the six-year window resets.

When is your deadline?

Connecticut RN licenses renew annually, by the last day of your birth month. Your exact date is in the state's online licensing system (eLicense). The renewal itself is yearly, while the mental health and suicide-prevention training is on its own six-year cycle - so the two clocks do not line up, which is part of what makes the training easy to overlook.
