North Carolina Board of Nursing
North Carolina does not lock you into a single hours number. It offers eight ways to demonstrate continuing competence for each two-year renewal, and most working nurses qualify through a combination of CE hours and practice hours rather than a flat 30.
Here are the routes, in plain English.
Eight ways to show continuing competence
For renewal, a North Carolina RN must complete one of eight learning options under the Board's continuing competence rules. The straight CE route is 30 contact hours, but the most common path for active nurses is 15 contact hours combined with practice hours - so you rarely need the full 30 if you are working.
The most-used options
- 30 contact hours of approved continuing education.
- 15 contact hours of continuing education plus 640 hours of active practice within the previous two years.
- National certification or re-certification by a national credentialing body recognized by the Board.
- A minimum of two semester hours of post-licensure academic education related to nursing practice.
- 15 contact hours plus a qualifying activity - such as a nursing research project, authoring a nursing article or book chapter, or developing and delivering CE presentations.
- CE activities must be approved by the Board or by a recognized accreditor such as ANCC.

Pick your competence option before renewing and keep the documentation - CE certificates, certification proof, transcripts, or practice verification - in case of audit.
